oh hello there, I’m Kayla
A Life Casting Artist
I specialize in custom casting sculptures (framed Shadow Boxes of baby’s hands and feet). If it is your desire to capture and preserve some of life’s most precious moments, you will want to consider a life cast of your newborn or infant’s hands and feet.
The first few weeks of your baby’s life will pass by in the blink of an eye, and every day you will begin to see new changes in this tiny miracle of life. The best time to capture these precious moments is in the first few weeks of your baby’s life. A great way to preserve these fleeting moments is to book a casting session and capture these memories of how tiny and precious your newborn’s hands and feet are. I will capture your newborn during the first few weeks of life, in a warm and cozy environment.

Frequently Asked Questions
This FAQ page is devoted primarily to the safety of life casting materials used at Memory Lane Designs. It is a compilation of the most commonly asked questions. If your questions are not answered here, please feel free to contact us.
What is Alginate?
Alginate is the extremely safe molding material most often used in LifeCasting. It is made from various food grade chemicals including alginic acid– an organic polymer derived from the stems of seaweed. When alginate “sets”, these polymers cross-link to one another using calcium ions as the glue, forming a flexible solid similar to rubber or cheese.
Is Alginate Safe?
Alginate is incredibly safe. Dental alginate, essentially the same as prosthetic alginate, has been used hundreds of millions of times IN people’s mouths by dentists all over the world during the past 70 years. To our knowledge, there has never been a verified instance of any allergic reaction to alginate. Neither have there been any verified cases of long-term injury from the use of alginate, even when used on a daily basis in a dental office.
What is a museum quality shadow box?
The shadow box is prepared with acid free matting and tapes, to insure colours will not fade over time.
How do I purchase Gift Certificates?
Gift Certificates can be purchased at the studio, or ordered by phone and mailed to you.
What is the ideal age to get your baby’s hands and feet cast?
Casts for Shadow Boxes can be done at any age, but it ideal to cast your baby as soon as possible. We have worked with babies as young as 1 week old to capture their hands and feet at their tiniest.
How long does an appointment take?
We set aside an hour for your appointment. The amount of time needed to take the castings can be variable, depending on your baby’s temperament that day.
